In light of long-standing racial and social injustices persisting around the country, the Board of Directors of the Capital City Symphony convened a task force in July 2020 to examine the practices of the organization and determine how CCS might increase their efforts to welcome and reflect the diversity of the DC community.  The report was finalized in early 2021 and implementation began immediately.  A summary of recommendations is below:

1. Community Partnerships

Strengthen and expand CCS’s role as a community organization through meaningful and developed partnerships.

  • CCS will provide full transparency of our plan to address inequities and it will be shared publicly. Quarterly staff check-ins and an annual REI committee assessment will be scheduled.

  • CCS will seek out and develop new relationships with H Street corridor businesses and other organizations in the larger D.C. community through cross-marketing, and other opportunities according to community needs.

  • In addition, CCS will also seek out and develop new artistic relationships.

2. Recruitment

Increase the racial diversity of orchestra members, staff, board, and contractors through active recruitment and relationship building.

  • CCS will seek out alternative avenues for audition and job recruiting including recruitment through community partners, and online advertising

  • CCS will develop relationships with local colleges and universities to provide opportunities to play and work at all levels of the organization.

3. Advertising and Marketing

Develop our marketing and communications strategy to reach a broader audience.

  • CCS will further develop our communications plans to ensure we are inclusive of all audiences.

  • CCS will develop a plan for targeted advertising in diverse publications including web, print, radio, and television.

4. Audience Composition

Continue to engage current audience members while creating a welcoming environment for

new audiences.

  • CCS will create a concert guide for new audiences available on the website and during events.

  • CCS will develop methods to track our progress through surveys to both audiences and orchestra members.

  • CCS will seek out opportunities to bring music to the wider D.C. community through community engagement.

5. Programming

Continue focus on diverse styles of classical music and composer backgrounds.

  • CCS will create opportunities for composers, guest artists, and partners to share and showcase their talents.

  • CCS will continue to center and amplify diverse voices in the music community.
